No more enchiladas

I finally quit my job at the Mexican Restaurant. No more margaritas, no more enchiladas, no more expat families and no more Japanese looking for an ethnic monkey server. I’m out of there! (If you can’t tell, I was burnt out).

My time there was overall ok, and it helped me tons with my spoken Japanese, but the place was constantly understaffed and trying to keep my head out of the water took a toll on me (I found myself on numerous occasions trying to bartend and serve 20-30 customers at the same time with no help). I’m glad the food was good because otherwise customers would have never returned given the service we were sometimes forced to give.

My blog and I are heading into transition mode. I’m moving to Boston to start my PhD in the fall. I’ll be in Japan for a little longer and then do some traveling before settling in Massachusetts. I’ll become quite erratic with my posting schedule but will come back with lots more stories once I’m in Boston.

I’ve noticed through the stats that wordpress gives me that I get a lot of readers looking for stuff on Japanese food and Tokyo restaurants. Of course I won’t be writing much about Tokyo restaurants, but my research will continue to be about Japan and food, so I’ll keep that theme going.

    Hi Nico!
So you’re moving out of Japan huh? I have enjoyed reading your blog. It kept me going through thesis writing, and it has kept me going at the workplace!
What will you do your PhD. in, and which uni are you heading to?
