Kathrine -- That sounds great! I definitely want to try L'Osier at some point. Too bad they rushed you at L'Atelier...I didn't have that problem when I went.

In Kyoto a lot of the best traditional food is where you stay at a Ryokan. About one hour away from Kyoto station by bus is Ohara, which is a beautiful area with gardens and temples and I stayed there at a ryokan called Seryo that made awesome food. http://www.seryo.co.jp/english.htm

Otherwise, Kikunoi is world famous, and if you can get a table it'll probably be worth every yen (and it's probably incredibly expensive). http://www.kikunoi.jp/english/about/1_restaurants.html

Hi Nico,

Just a quick update. We went to L`Atelier Friday and got a table at L`Osier for lunch today. I thought L`Atelier was nice, but not fantastic. The experince was a bit rushed. L`Osier on the other hand was great! I can highly recommend it. The service was exellent and the food was amazing.
As I mentioned I`ve only had one other Michelin experience - it was dinner and I guess you can`t really compare dinner and lunch. However, L`Osier def comes in second on the "best meals of my life list", Noma still ranking first.
If you have any Kyoto recs, please let me know as we`ll be leaving for Kyoto tomorrow.

Cheers

Katherine -- Good luck getting into L'Osier! If you can't make it, maybe try one of the Japanese places...Abe is quite cheap and serves a nice meal (they're not open on weekdays though). L'Atelier is definitely a good idea...awesome food!

So you checked off pepper and added fois gras... hum, is the list getting shorter or longer? =P

The dish look very delicious and clean. I like the Ramsay' idea of use star anise. I can imagine the licorice flavor will blend well with the sweetness of the pepper. So you will make this dish in September? ^_^

Hi Nico,

Thanks som much for your advice. I've booked a table at L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and am no. 4 on a waiting list for L'Osier.

I don't know how likely it is someone will cancel - but I hope at least 8 people do : )

I've only been to one other Michelin restaurant (Noma) as the price tag is not really student friendly in Denmark - so I'm really looking forward to it!

Kathrin --

Most places take reservations for lunch, and three weeks should be plenty of notice. If you show up at the beginning of lunch service, you should be able to get a table at some places as well (or counter seats, which are quite popular in Japan). Keep in mind though that a lot of these places are small, and you might end up lining up. My take is that lunch service is short, so you're better off with a reservation because you might not make it to another place if they're full.

Dress code depends a lot on the restaurant. I went with jeans and T-shirt to L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon and didn't feel out of place. Chemins, on the other hand, has a stricter dress code. During lunch time, my experience has been that casual, but not too casual, is enough.

Hope this helps...let me know where you end up eating!

Hi Nico,

Thanks for the "Budget Michelin in Tokyo" list. My boyfriend and I are going to Japan in 3 weeks, spending 5 days in Tokyo. Out budget allows us to try out a couple of the Michelin restaurants for lunch. I have a few questions I hope you can help me with.
I was wondering whether you need to book a table for lunch? Or is it first come - first served at most of them? If it necessary to book a table, is it even possible only 3 weeks in advance? And is there a dresscode at Michelin restaurants in Tokyo (ie can I wear flip flops....)?

Cheers,
Kathrine
